About Us

MAX'INUX CHILDCARE

Born from a shared vision to honour children, culture, and community, Max’inux Childcare was founded by Derrick King, Melissa Baxandall, and Chelsea Nestman. With decades of combined experience across Indigenous community development, early childhood education, and childcare operations, the founders have created a place where every child is seen, supported, and celebrated.

Derrick, a proud member of the Qalipu First Nation, has dedicated his career to advancing sustainable growth and self-determination within Indigenous communities. Melissa, a seasoned educator with more than 18 years in the field, is widely regarded as one of the most trusted and influential figures in early childhood education, known for building environments where children and educators flourish alike. Chelsea brings a depth of expertise as an Infant and Toddler Specialist, consultant, and advocate - blending developmental insight with hands-on experience in licensing and building strong, responsive programs.

What they have built together is more than a childcare centre, it is a living expression of their shared values and the spirit behind its name. Max’inux Childcare honours the importance of children as learners, leaders, and knowledge keepers within their communities, a principle that guides the high-quality care we provide to Indigenous and non-Indigenous children from birth through age 12.

Located in the heart of British Columbia, our centre offers a safe, inclusive environment where every child is supported to flourish. Rooted in Indigenous values and guided by the principles of community, connection to the land, and cultural identity, our programs nurture the whole child through meaningful experiences and responsive care. We offer a range of offerings designed to meet the evolving needs of children at every stage—fostering growth through play, rhythm, exploration, and strong relationships.

Our team of educators honours each child’s unique path while cultivating deep connections with families, community, and the natural world. Through consistent routines and opportunities for cultural expression, we help children develop confidence, resilience, and the social-emotional skills they need to navigate life with strength and joy.
